It is all about the shape, but that is not what we have to worry about. Terrorist can do just as well with a dirty bomb. We must all know our neighbors to find the terrorist. ~

It is not so difficult to make an A-Bomb. The difficult part is getting the weapons grade uranium or plutonium and knowing exactly how much is critical mass. An easy bomb to make is the golf bag bomb. In the open end have a cylinder of uranium with neutron generator on the tip. Put some explosive behind it with a fuse or a timer. You want to be far away when it detonates. At the bottom put a larger cylinder of uranium just below critical mass with a cavity the size of the smaller cylinder. When the explosive propels the small cylinder into the big one, the uranium goes critical and nuclear fission begins automatically. A neutron generator accelerates it, so you have a nice kiloton bomb. This is like the first bomb, Little Boy, dropped on Japan to end WWII. If you want to know how the other bomb worked, tell me. It is much more difficult to make. It uses plutonium.

You need enough pieces of fissionable material to add up to the material's critical mass. Then you build some mechanism that slams all of the pieces together at once. The chain reaction and explosion follow.
