i tried the add MS Window components and no luck. Where can I get a free download of Paint that will work with XP. I don't have the XP cd.

Well first of all it's just Microsoft Paint!! Go and download GIMP a better free tool:

It isn't MS Paint, but it is a very good image editing tool and is free. Much more powerful than Paint.

your mspaint maybe in win32 format
And your Win XP in win64 or NT format
Don't cry.
You can copy it from your friend.
Or download a similar and better one than it from internet.
search google for a paint program.

reinstall ms paint
or get another paint program
