It's been a long time since I have had a dog do this, and can't remember what it signifies. He is up-to-date on all his heart worm meds, vaccinations, flea meds and such, does he need to be seen by my vet? He seems to be doing this on rare occassions.

This is one of three things:

Either he has some intestinal worms, and simple dewormer from you veterinarian can fix that. He will do a fecal exam to determine if this is the cause.

Or, the needs he needs in anal glands expressed...Your vet can do this as well...This is when fluid gets trapped in the anal glands and causes an itchy inflammation. Your veterinarian will squeeze them, and they will pop, kind of like a pimple, and the problem fluid will leave the glands.

Or his bottom simply itches.....I say this because you say he only does it on rare occasions...

Either way, they are perfectly normal, and treatable....If it doesn't happen that often you might wait until your dogs next routine veterinary visit to mention it to the veterinarian, as you dog is not in any pain either way, he just has an itch. If you notice it happening more frequently though, go ahead and take him to the vet. If it is worms they could set up an infection.

It's likely that he has impacted anal glands. If you don't know how to clear them yourself, then you should see the vet or a groomer and have it done, and have them teach you how to do it.. If you don't think you can do it or stand the horrible smell, then have the vet do it for you.

It could be worms, but since he is on medication, it's likely the anal glands.

Sounds to me like your pooch has worms, this is typical in puppy's. Normally puppy's will always end up with worms at least once, either take your pet to the vet for a check up and shots or you can buy a dewormer at any local market.

There are a few possibilities

1. Worms. If your dog has worms, it makes their bottoms itch.

2. Impacted anal glans. since you seem to have done everything necessary in terms of vaccines, this is a very likely scenario.

3. "Dingleberries" :) Does your dog have long hair? is it possible he just has a dirty butt and is trying to clean it off?

4. He likes it. My Westie does this, too. No worms, no impacted anal glans, she just likes it.... it makes her smile!

My dog does also scoots his but on the carpet on rare occassions, it is only when he comes back from being groomed. The groomer shaves his but so of course it itches for a few days, scooting their but eases the itch...my groomer told me to expect this, its just like when we shave.

Anal glands-takd him to the vet and tell them he needs his anal glands expressed. As a vet tech I would recommend you ask the vet or tech to show you how to do it(yes I know it's gross)so that next time you won't have to pay for it as it will most likely happen again.

Yes, I'd take him to the vet. He could have full anal glands. Kind of a nasty "do-it-yourself" project. Probably not worms.

He needs his anal glands expressed. They are likely impacted and the fluids are building up and it is uncomfortable. A vet can do this for you as well as show you how to do it should it ever happen again.

He could have hemmoriods, worms, or his oil gland may be stopped up. A trip to the vet can tell you.

It's their anal glands. It happens to my dog and we have to get them squeezed ( nice) out at the vets monthly. If this costs too much they can even teach you to do it yourself, but, we chose not to!
