As soon as you complete your basic training!

Surely that would depend on how long your training is, what trade you choose and wether you choose the Army or the Air Force the chances of you being posted over seas is surely higher in the army, the Air Force are normally home in time for tea most days ! And I am not an expert on US Forces I am answering from a British perspective, but I would imagine its very similar. My Basic Infantry training was 28 weeks then went on some courses after and was overseas in Berlin about 8 months after joining up.

That depends on your contract, your desires, and the needs of the Army/Air Force.

I'll explain. In the Army, if you qualify, you can have an overseas station guaranteed on your contract, based on the job that you choose. I don't know if the USAF has this option, but I doubt it.

You will, in both branches, fill out a "Dream Sheet". This is a listing of the locations that you would like to be stationed at. This includes overseas locations. The military will then attempt to keep you happy by sending you to your "dream" location, if they can.

The needs of the military dictate, of course, where you will go. If they need you overseas, then off you go.

Depends I'm in the army, and I think if you ask when they draw up your contract they can make a deal, and the shortest I have seen is right after AIT which is an average of... about 4 months you have basic which is 9 weeks and then ait which is on an average of 7-18 weeks depending on your mos. Make sure when you pic your mos you go on-line and ask around about each mos what they do when they are over seas and make sure its something you can use when you get out of the army... also you should look into green and gold if your an officer it's easier for you to go over seas and also you go to school for free. no one tells people about it but look it up "green and gold"

my son did basic and trade [roughly 8 months total] and after a small time at home for leave period he then went to his 1st duty station abroad right after that..............now coming up for orders again and is looking at more overseas postings.

Air force it depends on the type of job you have as to where you can get stationed and what level of rank you need to be. so it would be worth looking at that before you decide.

Army well Hun at the moment its pretty much finish basic and then off to Iraq, so that must be taken into consideration before you sign for anything.

IMO the Air force certainly seems to have a great deal to offer [as do they all] just not so many risks involved perhaps !!!

for the army the basic training is 13wks then you have your advanced individual training for you mos (military occupational specialty)
which depends on your mos. Mine was a 31U which is a communications specialist. And my AIT was 14 wks and then I went home for a week then went to my 1st duty station in Fort Knox, KY But I think if you go overseas you get 2 weeks before you go to your duty station

Since we are in Afghanistan and Iraq, you choice of duty station will not be guarantee. The reason is that we are in two hot spots right now. So you might be deploy into the those two areas, or you might spend all your time in the states.

You should ask your local recruiters for those two respectable services.
