conductor is usually the guy making the annoucements, although here in NY, the engineer and conductor are the same. We call the guy drives the train the motorman

What do you mean by "call" him?

Trains generally have three crewmen.

The Conductor handles the trains paperwork and communications and such.

The Engineer "drives" the train, for lack of a better term.

The last is the Brakeman, who usually handles throwing switches and uncoupling cars.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that this answer applies to freight trains. We don't see too much passenger service in Kansas. Just the AmTrak SW Chief, and it's only at 3 am

Depends on the railroad

In the NYC subway, the person who operates the train is called a train operator (used to be motorman but they had to change it when women started doing the job). The conductor handles the opening/closing of the train doors as well as the general oversight of the train.

On PATH (NY/NJ) the person operating the train is called the engineer although I have heard them called motorman on occasion.

Otherwise as most have already pointed out the person operating the train is the engineer.

Engineer. The conductor collects the tickets and money.

I don't know where you're from but over in Australia, we just simply call them, 'train drivers'.

YOU DON'T WANT TO CALL HIM WHILE HE'S ON THE JOB. TOO MANY THINGS TO BE THINKING OF WHILE TRYING TO DO HIS JOB. HE'S RESPONSIBLE FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE AND THE TRAIN TOO.

'Driver' in the UK. Also 'motorman' on some electrical services.
