It's a cheap trick and eaily explainable
Steps 4 and 8 cancel each other out (adding 1 * 250 is the same as subtracting 250)
multiplying the first 3 digits by 80, then 250 (20000) basically left shifts the digits into the right place and factors by 2
adding the right four numbers twice puts them in the right place (on te hright of the number) by a factor of 2
you get your phone number multiplied by 2
dividing by 2 gives your correct number

Meh. This always works.
In steps 3-5, ur multiplying your first 3 digits by 20000 and adding 250. In step 8, ur subtracting 250, so u can cancel those out.
By adding ur last 4 digits twice, ur making it so that its twice your phone number. Just divide by two and yeah, thats all I have to say.

We had this one in the 1950s but you say --think of a number--and do as you have written.
