Is it more important to stop it than it is to argue over pissant ideological differences?

I think it's inevitable. You have insane people with nuclear, chemical, hand-held, etc. weapons just waiting for justification to use them.
Hatred is a horrible thing and we've never found a way to get past our differences-big or small.
The world has an "it all about me, and I'm right" attitude.
