Can water purification be applied to river that was dammed up?

Running water can not be as pure as lake water.
Moving water erodes soil and carries with it particulates that can be called pollutants. Still water allows sediments to fall out, thus the main body becomes pure and clear.

Filtration to remove particles . Then u chlorinate it to kill all bacteria and then aeration to reduce the chlorine to about 4 ppm. and u can drink it.
