Why can't you people just explain in your own words to us.
That way it will prove to us that you understand what you are talking about and not just being used as a zombielike pawn of the bible.

Nope. If at first glance there only seem to be verses I will thumb-down. I'm not in the habit of discussing things with a quote-o-matic. Discussion requires thought, not a simple mental script to select pre-made and often ill-fitting responses.

I do, out of all of my answers I've used no more than 2 legit websites. I think it is better that way. Since you know i dont want to be a zombielike pawn ......
but it is still necessary at times to quote scripture to back up God's Word....

Rarely, if ever, do I read the long biblical quotes. I believe it is best to simply state the verses because all Christians can access a Bible. The questioner raises a strong point in that an attempt should be made to explain in one's own words.

I might quote a verse from the Book of Mormon because not everyone possesses that scripture. Even so, I won't quote entire pages of verses.

people who have to recite bible verses don't really have a full working relationship with God. If they did, they would be learning directly from the Holy Spirit, not form antiquated writings.

Please realize, I'm not disparaging the bible or any sacred writings. All should be read and studied. Nor am I saying that I have a perfect relationship with God. I'm just saying that in a souls evolution, there comes a time when God's voice is louder than words in a book.

Quite simple - they do not have enough brain cells to answer so just cut and paste text!

Most of these people are fundies and are fast turning Christianity from a religion into an ideology - but then they probably would not understand the difference!!!

Whether you are Christian or an atheist the simple truth is that the bible and Christianity say God is about "love and truth", not "wrath and punishment".

When I ask a question and people answer with Scripture, I read them. I do not have time to read all the answers for the questions I am answering. I value the Bible, and we back up our answers with the Scripture we believe in.

I am more interested what God says about the subject than what is a human opinion. I am willing to hear people out but it can get really bizarre without the Word of God. : )

I seldom read the longer ones, just scan to get the general idea. I agree that the far better answer to a question is one that explains in their own words, with perhaps a reference in the "source" section. A short quote which is very much to the point, followed by discussion of the point, is probably the best.

Sometimes. Some people want to know where we get our ideas from. Normally, after I explain in my own words, I'll leave a link to where I got the information or I'll leave a bible quote because people expect it. I can't speak for others. I can only speak for myself.

i probably wouldn't at least not off the computer. that's why when i answer questions i try to use my own words and give the bible reference so if they want to they can look it up themselves. that or i just say what i think since half the time i know it's in the bible but i don't remember where

Quoting verses is a way for the religious to 1; show off, and 2; ignore an argument.

If you pose a well thought out question that challenges a highly religious person they will invariably retract into a rhetoric shell that protects them from having to really think about their beliefs.
Quoting verses allows them to not think about the tough questions and rely on text like mantra to stop them from growing intellectually.
