As long as there are Civil Engineers building targets, there will be a need for Mechnical Engineers to build better weapons.
Seriously, though, You should look into Bio-Engineering - you could kill 2 birds with 1 stone. There will always be openings in both fields - though I would say (to simplify) that Bio-Engineering is probably involved with newer technology (building a better 'wooden leg'), while M.E. is more involved with newer techniques with older tecnology (how to generate power better).

Personally I think you have more opportunities as a mechanical engineer. Biomedical Industries hire lots of ME's, but a BME can't necessarily get a job in a lot of other fields that mechanical engineers can. Plus from my experience many biomedical companies have the mechanical engineers working on design and the Biomedical engineers working in quality control.

Mechanical Engineering is an ever green fiels. It wont let u down, and about the opportunities the current scenario may make u feel that biomedical may be more promising , but trust me mechanical engineering would be a better option . and regarding the jobs , u cant count on them

mechanical engineering has a standard demand at any time with production goes more and more. after your mechanical engineering graduation if you want to become a marine engineer you can pursue and getting a fat salary.
biomedical is also equally good latest of the kind.
if you like you can pursue.

I suggest taking the field you are more interested in. The more you like your field/job, the better you work, the more opportunities that will open up for you.
