I know there are trains but I'm really confused as to which one to use! My friend and I will be arriving from the UK on the 5th September and we need to get to Manhattan. Does anyone know the easier and cheapest way to do this? (We're students by the way so the emphasis is on cheapest!)

You can get the express train which takes you to the Port Authority - 42nd and 8th. We just did it in February. When you walk out of arrivals, the buses are just across the street. There is usually an official around that you can ask if you're not sure. I can't remember how much it was but it wasn't much for a return ticket and probably your cheapest option. To get back to Newark, you get the bus from outside Burger King opposite the Port Authority Terminal on 42nd street - there is a sign (and normally a queue of people!)

Depending on where you are staying in Manhatten, you may be able to walk to your hotel from the Port Authority, which we did.

I love New York and can't wait to go again in November, which will be my 6th time - I hope you enjoy it. I'd be happy to give you any more info on things to do if you need it - just email me.

There are Express buses right outside the terminal, that go directly to downtown Manhattan. The fare is probably changed since i used it. Check the link for particulars.
Folks at times like to share cab fare to the City, i would be careful doing that. Enjoy.

Have a pleasant trip.

There are airport express buses which leave from outside the terminal and you can buy tickets at the information kiosk in the terminal it is about $10-$15. These buses leave you outside Grand Central Station.

As I understand it there's the PATH train you can take from Newark Penn station airport to World Trade Centre station on 34th street.

Try planning your itinerary:

I think in all it'll be approx $10: PATH train from Newwark Penn is $1.50 and Airtran is $5.50.

Enjoy

There are signs in the airport pointing you towards the AirTrain to Amtrak or NJ Transit. This is probably your easiest option, and it's not too expensive.
