I have a 2.65 gal tank with two female bettas. I just noticed yesterday that my female yellow betta, Belle, has popeye because of stressfully high amounts of nitrate. I feed them everyday and I know it was not like that on Monday... guess I didn't know something like [popeye] could occur so fast. The levels have been adjusted and I have bought and treated a "hospital tank" with MarPlex-Two immediately to medicate my sick fishy. Hopefully I caught the symptom of popeye early enough to let it heal, but what I am most concerned about is her eating. She has not eaten since Monday and I am terribly worried. I try to put the little "betta bits" in front of her good eye so that she can see it clearly but she doesn't seem interested. What do I do?

Thanks for all the help.

The filmy part that was enlarged over her eye (or was her eye) looks like it popped. She still has her black pupil looking thing but the rest of the blue in her eye has disapeared and is now just red... Any thoughts?

Pop eye is actually a symptopm of a liver infection. The Marplex is a good water treatment, but won;t help your sick fish. You need to treat with an antibiotic. It's great that you have a hospital tank, it will make the treatment so much easier.

I would recommend Treating with Furanace or as a second choice Maracyn 2. Is it possible that's what you have instead of Marplex? I hope so as that would mean you're already on target.

Don't worry about her not eating, she can go a week with out food with no problem at all. Once she starts getting better, she'll eat again.

If you have any quesiton or think I can help, please feel free to email me.

Just keep feeding her, eventually she should begin to eat. when you go to feed her remove the old food from the day before, this way it will help to keep the water levels in the hospital tank better.
to avoid this situation i reccomend getting a larger tank for your bettas. the larger the tank, the easier it is to keep good levels and healthy conditions. You can buy an inexpensive glass ten gallon tank at any pet place and even walmart. If you are really strapped for cash look on the internet, there are loads of people trying to get rid of their tanks for practically nothing, you can usually find good deals.

you treated the betta for popeye and that is right--one question--is their a filter in the tank of the betta or the hospital tank? If so, remove the charcoal out of it as the charcoal will take the medicine out and the fish aren't getting the full amount of meds

You can try feeding a Live food to your betta, many pet stores have live worms of various kinds that are good for your fish.

Only a very sick betta will refuse live foods.
