I'm thinking that you need to make a priority here! Gas and food certainly outweigh an expensive gift! Here are some thoughts:
1. If you are between paychecks and need to fill your tank in order to get to work, then do that first. Hopefully your gas tank isn't huge!
2. Have your child invite a couple of guests for dinner and a slumber party to celebrate his/her birthday.
3. Make spaghetti out of Ragu, ground beef, pasta, and cheese. Kids love spaghetti
4. Make a cake or cupcakes (they don't usually cost much)
5. See what you have leftover. If you have enough to send each kid to the movies, ask your child if that would be an option. Or, rent movies and purchase your child a small token with the promise that you'll supplement on your next payday (if you can, if you can't, then simply do what you can and add lots of love)

You obviously have a computer so you can buy your son a computer game for about $20. $30 for gas and $50 for food. Kinda tight but it can be done if you think about what food you are buying. If I have to stretch meals I go for twofers...such as hamburger meat that bought in bulk can be made a lot of ways such as meatloaf (2 meals out of that), spaghetti (doesn't need much sauce and pasta is cheap), shepherds pie ( hamburger, carrots, an onion and brown gravy with mashed potato over the top of it...2 meals). A pack of chicken thighs makes two meals also if you make it with a can of cream of chicken soup and some no yolk noodles. boil the chicken for an hour and add the rest of the ingredients and cook until the noodles are done. Buy a big bag of potatoes...they can be served in many ways and fill you up. Good luck and happy birthday to your son.

When money is tight, I talk to my child and give him and option. I can either get you something inexpensive right now or we can wait and get you something you want when I get some money.
Unfortunately, we have to make those tough decisions. If your 14 year old has an mp3 player you can buy like $20 on a iTune card. A cool T-shirt. I guess, I am thinking about my teenaged boy. I guess girls might be a little different.
Good luck and keep your head up.

seriously - you are asking financial advice on Yahoo?
Some of the questions that people ask are really odd.
$25 gift card
$25 gas
$50 food
you can break this down many ways.
