There many ways to generate ideas. These include question and answer forum, like what Yahoo has; problem-solving (not the mathematical one) or situations-analysis; surveys or polls; interviews, brainstorming sessions; workshops, research, observations and experimentation, among others. A challenging and relevant question usually generate a wealth of ideas.

A way I always do is when I study something I don't agree with the writer untill the truth becomes obvious to me. I don't try to understand the feeling the writer has had while writing, i just make criticisms and disagree and think to alternatives.
This causes that you go study more and get to the point of giving great new ideas.
