The only people who won't admit that market fishing has decimated fish stocks are those who make money from this destruction. Unfortunately, some of those who make money from it are politicians (accepting "campaign contributions, as they're called in the U.S., or "bribes" as we call them in other countries). Actually, there's another group which doesn't admit it -- the "don't know or don't care" people, who unfortunately make up a huge portion of the population.

What to do? First of all, boycott ALL commercially harvested fish -- this means no canned tuna, no orange roughy, no Chilean seabass. However, this won't help much, because the "don't know or don't care" people will continue buying the stuff.

Secondly, make noise when the issue comes up in the media. Every time there's a story about declining fish stocks, they talk about "sport and commercial fishing" as if the two are closely related. And they always mention "sport fishing" first, implying that it's the more important of the two. We have to point out that sport fishing and commercial fishing are two separate industries, with different licenses, different regulations, and different fishing methods and gear. Commercial fishing takes the vast majority of the fish harvested, and beyond that, virtually all of the "bycatch" -- fish which are killed and discarded. And finally, commercial fishermen seriously mess up the ocean -- trawlers destroy the bottom habitat, and lost or discarded nets kill fish, seals, whales, diving birds, and so on.

Finally, when fishing, be "good." That is, obey all regulations. Don't kill more fish than can be "well used" (don't sack up a mess of fish for cat food or to leave in the office freezer in case someone wants it). Don't litter or otherwise trash the environment. And when you meet non-fishermen, don't be a jerk. Personal impressions can go a long way in affecting people's opinions of what you do.

Let's not underestimate water pollution. Sure commercial fishermen use this huge purse seine nets, yet pollution is also doing a number of fish at least on the east coast. About 20 years ago, the Atlantic ocean was a trash dumping ground for everyone including hospitals. Then in the mid 1980s, the hospital waste washed ashore on Long Island, NY. Everyone was in shock. No one knew that garbage was being dumped 150 miles off the coast. Most likely it is still going on, because humans need somewhere to dump their garbage and can't burn it all because that would send air pollutants into our atmosphere. We have so much garbage and don't know what to do with it all, so we end up polluting the environment.

I don't think, I know. Fishing enthusiasts are already doing what they can, they just need to spread the word, but until everyone who doesn't live near water decides that they don't need seafood, there's nothing to be done. Catch and eat local fish instead of relying on boats and nets to catch your seafood. You want something from somewhere else, you'll have to go somewhere else and trade some of your own fish. *shrug* It's the only answer I've found, and since I can't implement it on my own, I'll never know how it works until society collapses and people HAVE to rely upon their own fishing skills again.

yes it is a proven fact also there will be no cod left in the north sea within the next 20 years if we keep at it the same way so all of the comercial fishing has to stop.good question.
