The military can better somebody's life by teaching them discipline, getting (and keeping) them in shape, building up their self-confidence, teaching them to work in a team environment, teaching them skills that they can carry on into the civilian world, teaching them leadership qualities, and giving them a sense of belonging to something.
This list is not complete or all inclusive. These are just some of the top things that life in the military can do for somebody.
However, this is NOT true for everybody. Just like in anything else in the world, the individual must be receptive and must have a desire to attain these qualities. Life in the military is not for everyone. Thank God for an all volunteer force. A military draft might put bodies in uniforms, but only the "heart" of a man (or woman) will make them soldiers.

I was in the Navy's nuclear power program for six years and I have an excellent job in civilian nuclear power. I make more than most of the people I know with degrees and I don't have the student loan debt. The Navy gave me a chance to learn a valuable skill while serving my country. The latter being the most important to me. I got to visit many foreign countries while I was in the Navy which gave me an even greater respect for the United States. So the next time a college kid talks about how bad America is ask him/her where they've been and what they have done.

you need to rephrase this question.
How does it better people lives in general, or how does it better the lives of the soldiers who serve in it?
