When I was a kid, "Your mamma wears army boots" was one of the biggest playground insults. But now, women seem to be accepted in many militaries (especially in the UK).

Would you take that phrase as an insult, or as a compliment? And why?

Some great answers. I can't decide which one is best (I wish I could pick more than one best). I feel old too. Maybe I'll retire from answers.

The boots your describe make sense for certain temperatures, and weather conditions. I have a pair of hiking boots which I wear when I have to walk any distance in cold weather, when there is packed snow, or icy sidewalks. They keep me warm. They are comfortable, and they grip the sidewalk or path. I also have lighter weight, fashionable boots which I wear to work, when I drive, and simply have to walk a few steps to and from my car. I would argue that you should choose according to the conditions and worry a little less about the fashion. If the army boots were all I had, I would wear them and be grateful for their warmth and durability!

I never thought of it as an insult. Any woman that wore Army boots was/is a tough woman. Imagine the crap she had to take because of her lack of fashion.

A young lady friend of mine invited me to a high school string concert. The guys were all in tuxes, and all the young ladies were in long black gowns. As they went up on stage, there was one strikingly beautiful young lady and as she lifted her gown to climb the steps, she had HIGHLY GLOSSED BLACK COMBAT BOOTS ON! Yup...this is for real! I asked my friend about it and she told me this girl wore them to the prom, too! Her dad is Navy...go figure. :-)

Good lord you just made me feel really old... I haven't heard that one in what 20 years...

my god... thanks for reminding me how much older i am to most people on here lol.

Yeah that comment has gone the way of the dodo (is that one still in use?)

I don't think it is either, most young people would look at you funny and most older people will react like me lol.
