Asbestosis is not nescessarily fatal, but can decrease lung capacity and lead to heart failure. It causes chronic scarring in the plueral walls and can actually lead to mesothelioma. Mesothelioma, on the other hand is a rare form of cancer caused by prlonged expsosure to asbestos. This cancer is highly resistant to conventional radiotherapy and chemo drugs, and very often has a poor survival rate.

asbestos,a material once used as insulation, is a carcinogen. it is still in many facilities but poses no threat unless it is disturbed. mesothelioma is a cancer caused by repeated contact with asbestos.usually by inhaling the dust from it. the asbestos can sit in the lungs for many years undetected.
my father has a lot of it in his lungs due to the work he did. the piece of lung the dr.'s removed a few years ago is on hold for testing for mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is the actual name of the cancer although sometimes the news calls it the "Asbestos Cancer". Asbestos is the actual material that caused the cancer to develop..it was often used in the development of buildings because it was flame retardant. Hope this helps.
