Procreation is an ongoing process which can be interrupted at any point, right from not having sex in the first place, through contraception, and drugs which prevent implantation, to abortion anywhere up to the moment of birth.

Somewhere along that process, most people would have a point where they consider it's OK to interfere to prevent the birth of a baby up to that point, but not afterwards - e.g. abstinence is OK, but contraception isn't.... or contraception is OK, but abortion isn't... or abortion is OK but only up to week 20... or whatever. It's simply a matter of conscience where you personally decide to draw the line, and on what basis.

For myself, I cannot accept that an undifferentiated bunch of cells has more rights than the fully grown adults who are responsible for its existence. I also cannot accept that it's right to kill a foetus when it's fully developed and due to be born. Logically then, there has to be a point somewhere in between that I decide, on the basis of conscience, is the point at which abortion becomes unacceptable. I don't know enough about it to have a definite view where that point lies, but it must lie somewhere in the 9 months of pregnancy.

It's in the nature of life that there are no easy answers to this kind of question, as it's a matter of subjective opinion rather than objective fact - and my opinion is that abortion cannot be wrong, per se.

Oh, and it's pointless to argue about whether the embryo is 'human life' or not - Of course it is. That is not the issue. The issue is whether a human life at a stage of being a tiny featureless blob of cells should be protected at the expense of the wishes of the parents - and particularly the woman who would have to give birth to it. I don't think it should.

How many people do you know who have been jailed for having an abortion?

... Just as I thought.

No it isn't a crime.
Nothing wrong with it in any sense of the word. It is essentially nothing more than picking off a scab.... albeit from the inside.

O'course a certain hamster earlier on was talking about drawing lines.... I wouldn't draw lines anywhere. It is as alright to remove the lump of foetal cells as it is to knife some human to death on the street.... or line up 10,000 filthy humans to be systematically shot. Those last two are definitely considered "crimes" socially.... but that doesn't mean there is anything intrinsically "wrong" with them.
Abortion isn't even killing though... I wouldn't recommend even giving it a second thought.

So, if you are poor...you should kill yourself or your kids? That doesn't make any sense.

This is a person you are talking about...a person without a choice. A person who could bring much to her/his mother and father. Yes, it's a lot of responsibility with tons of rewards. Also, an abortion has long lasting psychological effects on the mother especially.

Abortion can never be the right answer...killing a life to make another's life easier is just plain unethical and inhumane. If they are that strapped they can put the baby up for adoption.

Please advise your friend to keep the baby...and to further abstain from sex. Obviously this is not a man who will stand by her and do the right thing.

It isnt illegal.

Morally I am not comfortable with it after eight weeks, in fact morally I am not comfortable with it at all.

It shouldnt be taken lightly and is not an easy decision. It will live with this girl for the rest of her life.

That said,

Until you have been in that situation you have no idea how it feels. If abortion was illegal it would make a hard decision a lot harder. It would also force women to have illegal back street abortions which put women at risk.

You are not immoral. You are being a good friend. Support your friend and be there through this horrible time.

The Catholic Church has always condemned abortion as a grave evil. Christian writers from the first-century author of the Didache to Pope John Paul II in his encyclical Evangelium Vitae ("The Gospel of Life") have maintained that the Bible forbids abortion, just as it forbids murder.

For more information on this topic go to this link and look for section 2270 and following.

I'm sorry for both you and your friend, however abortion is morally wrong. It is the taking of an innocent life. Perhaps your friend could look for alternatives if she is unable to care for or support the baby.

Good luck :-)

Abortion is intrinsically wrong and anyone who assists in abortion in anyway is also guilty of murder but not just any murder, this is even worse as it is killing the most innocent life on the planet.
People like to say that it is a Woman`s choice but what choice? the choice to kill innocent life! no there is always only one choice and that is life, the freedom to choose is given to us to make the right choice according to God`s commandments and God`s revealed will,it is not the right to choose whatever suits us at the time, the very act of sexual intercourse is to bring forth new life and just to use this as a means of gratification is shallow and very selfish indeed.

abortion is the deliberate murder of an unborn child, the worst type of murder plain and simple.

dont do it!

And He says (interpretation of the meaning):

“… if anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or (and) to spread mischief in the land — it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind…”[al-Maa'idah 5:32]
