i have a 99 ford super duty powerstroke. the transmission will only work for about two or three miles then it just quits pulling. I shut the truck off then start it right back up then it is fine for another couple of miles. I did drain the fluid and it is burnt but could that be my problem?

Depends if it was doing it before the fluid was changed. Usually it holds around 13-15 quarts with the converter drained. You might be low of fluid

Sounds like your fluid may have lost is viscosity. Have you changed your fluid recently? Your tranny will start to wear over time, however the old fluid will remain sticky and help the bands adhere to each other. If you change the fluid for new, the detergent in the new will clean up the bands and they will start to slip. Moral of the story change often or not at all. This problem could also be in your torque converter or your valve body. Don't mess around, find a good transmission shop and let them check it out. With all the new censers and computer on the newer model cars its best to leave it to the pros.

Good luck

The problem is the service people. Even when you get the error code, it requires some deductive reasoning. Go to a different shop that has someone who knows cars/trucks and is a bit more old school. Because he has more resources (experience to draw on). Hopefully you will be able to find someone who has not been dumbed down by dependency on a diagnostic computers.

It could be that you need to do a complete transmission flush or you may have a bad torque converter, another possibility could be a electronic component that governs it may be going out.
