I'm looking for the correct medical names of the medicines. If anyone with fibromyalgia has used them, I would appreciate your comments about how well they worked.

I actually use Ultram (tramadol). It is the one without the Tylenol. It is 50mg per pill. I use these along with Robaxin, a 500mg muscle relaxer. I take 3 Ultram in the morning, with 1/2 Robaxin, and the same in the afternoon. Some people react differently to the medications I am on, but in most people I have spoken to, the combo of the two really helps them with their chronic pain, muscle spasms, and even Fibromyalgia. I was just diagnosed with fibromyalgia last Tuesday, and I have suffered with it since April of 2002. I know where you are at as far as medications to help with the pain. I did not like the narcotics. They made me loopy, tired, nauseaous on occasion, and constantly hungry. I dont get any of that with these medications. They work really well for me and take the edge off of the pain so I can go on doing the normal things I do everyday. I hope this helps you in your fight against this painful and frustrating disease. Let me know how things go!

I may be mistaken, but I don't know that there have been any meds developed directly for fibro - I do know of an antidepressant called Cymbalta that two of my docs (psych & rheumatologist) say they've had good results with for other patients.

Cymbalta has done wonders for me. I have less pain and I don't feel like sleeping all day. (I don't know if you've seen the commercials, but it's touted as being an antidepressant and pain reliever.) I used to take my pain med at least twice a day, but now I usually will take 800mg Ibuprofen then the Ultracet only if I get the really bad "skin" pain (bruised feeling and flu-like aches.)

Speaking of Ultracet - This is a combination of Tramadol and acetaminopen that I've been taking since I was dx'd. I like it because it doesn't make me sleepy and it just plain works. There's always that pain that just doesn't seem will ever go away competely, but this knocks it down really well. ** Please note that I've been told that there is a risk of liver problems d/t the acetaminophen, so I go in regularly for liver function tests. **

I tried taking Tramadol alone for a while because of my insurance, but it did absolutely nothing for me.

I really hope it helps! Just remember to talk to your doctor about any med you may feel might help you.... Good Luck!

After attempting to read the looooong post below, which should not even be here, because that is called chatting, which is not allowed and the absence of the spell check use makes it makes it extremely hard for us to read! But, like one of them said, everyone reacts differently to different meds. Also, make sure you are getting enough sleep. The body cannot heal itself without deep, restorative sleep. so, perhaps in some case it is best to treat the insomnia, so that the Fibro can take time to heal. Neurontin is a good sub for lyrica, but if Lyrica does not work, it is doubtful that another anticonvulsant will help the pain. Read this web site below. It is good, proven information. Also, support groups online are very helpful to get ideas and support for this painful, life changing condition. I manage 3 online support groups for Restless legs syndrome, and lots of us have Fibro, too. We always find it is best to trat underlying problems, like the insomnia, GERD, etc, and the primary problem seems to improve in some cases. I cannot take any of the Fibro approved drugs, but have taken opiates for another chronic pain problem (my back) for 6 yrs, and they have helped all over, without addiction, for a lot of my problems.

as far as i know there isnt any meds that were made for fibro specifically. drs treat the things that are a part of fibro-like panic-ibs-pain-depressions etc. they use the same meds they use for ppl that have those problems.
