I hate my living room mahogany window frames. They suck the light out of the room. I'd rather not do a poor job of painting them. Is there a sort of PVC fascia available instead?

*shriek*... You should keep the mahogany window frames! Do you know how expensive wood framed windows are? (PVC/Aluminum windows are the cheapest and ugliest, IMAO). In the city I live in, they make you have wood windows and if they could they would make you burn all the alum./pvc windows asap. However, I do understand as you mentioned... it can make your room appear dark. There are other ways to solve this. Why don't you get light colored curtains to contrast the wood? You can also paint the other 3 walls lighter than the wall with the window. This would brighten up the room. Also, if you have hard wood floors, you can use a light colored beige rug to brighten the room. Please... DONT RUIN YOUR WINDOWS~~~ >_<

If you have a mahogany dinning table and chairs they could be worth a few pounds so contact some reputable antique dealers in your area and they will possibly put them into an auction for you and charge a small commission. If you know that they are not worth much give them to some deserving cause.

It would be a crime against all wood to paint mahogany. It would cost a small fortune to replace what you have. Carefully remove the mahogany trim you have. Give it away or sell it to someone who will appreciate it. Then replace the trim with something that suits your tastes.

Could you replace the windows and get the more efficient ones and save some money on the heating and the AC?

If not then how about getting a carpenter and have him replace the frames with oak?

You could do it yourself, if you want to get a miter box, and make the cuts yourself.

Just sand them down and paint them.
