Very carefully???

Even the top ice skaters fall from time to time. If you fall on your camera, it will more than likely be broken and repairing broken cameras is cost-prohibitive. So one fall might equal buying a new camera.

If I were you, I would play it safe and use my camera from the sidelines to shoot other skaters. You can experiment using fast shutter speeds to freeze the action, or using slower speeds to show action through motion blur. Use a slow shutter speed combined with the flash to freeze part of the motion for interesting effects.

Of course, images from the skater's point of view would be interesting and not often seen. I guess you will have to decide for yourself if the pics are worth risking your camera to get.

You will have to slow down, or focus on something in the distance so your speed won't show on the photo. If your digital camera has a "sports" setting, or other high speed adjustment, try that as well.
Talk about "zooming!"

shoot from the hip [strap /tape it to you tummy]provided your a good skater [dont want to fall on your camera]
use a smaller lens [this is not a long lens job
use a fast speed/fast film ,its a bit grainy but captures the action
if your not scating use tripod and fast shutter/fast film for the fast action ,dont shoot directly into the light or with it directly behind you
