I have taken vicodin on different occasions and have never felt stomach pains. I just took two for a back ache and my stomach is hurting. i haven't eaten anything for about eight or nine hours, could that be why my stomach is acting up? If so why?

I was advised by my doctor to always take Vicodin (bad back also) with food of milk. The one time I didn't my stomach acted up....so yrs, I would say the agitation you feel is due to taking the medicine on an empty stomach.

I talked to my pain specialist at UofM (university of Michigan) about taking a vicodin on an empty stomach. I take them for numerous back, hip, spine and pelvic bone problems due to several reconstructive surgeries of my rt hip muscles and pelvic area that occurred 21 yrs ago, that no has worn down to almost nothing. I asked him if i took vicodins on empty stomachs what could happen and why? He answered that the acetaminophen (tylenol) could have a harsh reaction with an empty stoach because there is so much mgs in one tablet. It really depends on the size of the vicodin (500mg vicodin is 5mg of hydrocodone/500mg acetominophen, 750mg vicodin is 7.5mg hydrocodone/750mg of acetominophen and 1000mg vicodin is 10mg hydrocodone/1000mg acetominophen) He told me that if someone has been taking them for a long period of time that the acetominphen can be more harsh when taken on an empty stomach since the it burns wholes in your stomach lining and your liver which in turn causes pain and ulcers. He also said that if someone takes a vicodin, but is not used to them or does not take them for long periods of time that their stomach lining just may not be used to the affects of a vicodin on an empty stomach which cause stress on the stomach lining in turn cause pain or cramping. When a vicodin is not taken with food it makes the drug act up to its full potential. When taking it with food it causes the drug to be soaked into the food before reaching the blood, which causes it to subside a little. If i were you i would do two of the following things before taking the medication on an empty stomach again:
1: find out if the medication is the same strength that you have taken in the previous times, if so contact your doctor and find out why it could be hurting,
2: only take it with food, because everyone could ALWAYS change and things that didnt make you sensitive could make you sensitive now.
3: contact your doctor if the pain proceeds or gets worse about changing your methods of pain relief, and have him run a test to make sure that you do not have any ulcers
I went though a phase when my stomach had a little bit of pain, so i had the doctor change my medicine to Norco, which is a narcotic like vicodin except with 1/2 the acetominophen that a vicodin has which eased my stomach and didnt cause nausea and also gave BETTER pain relief!

Pain Killers and Vitamins - never on an empty stomach. I always take vitamins and when I've had to take percoset from breaking my toe and vicodin for my wisdom teeth recently I always eat a piece of bread with it.
