In doing this they follow Jesus' example. He went to the Jews. The Jews had their own religion, but in many ways it had turned away from the Word of God. (Matthew 15:1-9) All nations have religions of some kind, whether so-called Christian or non-Christian. It is vitally important for people to hold beliefs that conform to God's own Word, and the efforts of the Witnesses to assist them in doing this constitute a showing of neighbor love.

A common misconception is that Jehovah's Witnesses go from door-to-door because they feel it is their duty to "recruit" a householder, or get him to "convert". In fact, Jehovah's Witnesses would go from door-to-door even if there were no hope that anyone would change their religion, or even if no one would listen to them!

That is because Jesus Christ specifically assigned the house-to-house ministry to the Christian congregation, with no regard for specific results.

(Luke 10:1,2) After these things the Lord designated seventy others and sent them forth by twos in advance of him into every city and place to which he himself was going to come. 2 Then he began to say to them: “The harvest, indeed, is great, but the workers are few. Therefore beg the Master of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.

Jehovah's Witnesses are trained to direct attention to the bible, and move on when their message is unwanted. Since each congregation in the United States tries to call at every home in its territory at least twice each year, there is strong motivation for them to move on where little interest is shown. Also, the Scriptures help the Witnesses to expect little interest from most:

(2 Timothy 4:3-5) For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching ...and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories. You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do the work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry.

Good question. A question that also should have been asked of Jesus and his Apostles. The Jews had their own religion and didn't need a new one. Especially one that was creating their own scriptures to match their beliefs instead of relying on the Holy Torah which had sustained God's People for hundreds of years.

Perhaps the Apostles should have left well enough alone. If Christianity was a true religion, the Jews would gone to them in droves.

So, I guess it depends on your point of view.

The Jehovah's Witnesses take seriously Jesus' command to preach.

"Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit." -- Matthew 28:19

"While I did not hold back from telling YOU any of the things that were profitable nor from teaching YOU publicly and from house to house." -- Acts 20:20

By observing the command to preach, we show Jehovah that we love him.

"I do nothing of my own initiative; but just as the Father taught me I speak these things." -- John 8:28

We also preach because we want to counteract the lies that Satan is promoting against him.
As Jehovah’s Witnesses, we yearn to share in exposing Satan’s slanders and in sanctifying God’s name before mankind.

"The god of this system of things has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, that the illumination of the glorious good news about the Christ, who is the image of God, might not shine through." -- 2 Corinthians 4:4

"“YOU are my witnesses,” is the utterance of Jehovah, “even my servant whom I have chosen, in order that YOU may know and have faith in me, and that YOU may understand that I am the same One. Before me there was no God formed, and after me there continued to be none. I am Jehovah, and besides me there is no savior.”
“I myself have told forth and have saved and have caused [it] to be heard, when there was among YOU no strange [god]. So YOU are my witnesses,” is the utterance of Jehovah, “and I am God." -- Isaiah 43:10-12

The apostole Paul showed how important is to preach the good news.

"If, now, I am declaring the good news, it is no reason for me to boast, for necessity is laid upon me. Really, woe is me if I did not declare the good news!" -- 1 Corinthians 9:16

They are expected to convert people and get people to see the light (their light)..... At times I have spent time at the door (when I'm bored) stating I am an atheist and having a debate about things, what I dont like is when they leave, they stand at the top of my driveway and bless my house. Sheeesh...... that is soooooo rude!!!! and such disrespect for my non-belief. guess thats why so many doors do get slammed in their face.

Because every True Believer in the world thinks his or her religion is the One True Faith and that they're commanded by their god to force their nonsense on everybody else.

Because their religion is false. No other God offers assuming promise of salvation like Jesus Christ. Other religions can do countless deeds, but how would they know it alone is enough to be saved. Much more too.

They are answering Rev. Charles Taze Russell's call to go out and annoy others.

The last time they came to my house I didn't believe I would ever see a human run that fast.
