Where in California do you want to go? The mountains are primarily within the Sierras, which are in CA. If you are going far enough south, come across on 44 to 40 (at OK City), and westward all the way to Barstow, CA, and then head north if you need to. That's the way I came to St. Louis (backwards, of course) from Boulder Creek a couple of months ago, and the mountains were no problem at all. It's a pretty boring road, but you can go really, really fast in those big open stretches.
