I weight train seriously 3-4 times per week and do 2 other fitness related activities. i am trying to both lose weight and build muscle. i gather i should be eating around th 1.5g of protein per kg i weigh. is this roughly correct? how much protein can be absorbed by the body? ie. is it a waste of money if i eat more than a certain amount of protein in any 1 hour period as some of it will just pass through me?

if anyone knows a figure that for example, "only 20g of protein can be absorbed in any 3 hour period", that would be most helpful to know.

thanks very much!

I am 27 years old and weight train SERIOUSLY. ie. 0.75g of protein per kg of body mass is no where near sufficient.

it really depends on how old you are.

16 -18 year olds should eat 64 - 70g a day
19 - 64 year olds should eat 55g a day

the recommended daily intake (RDI) of protein is baes on 0.75 g per kg of body mass.

just remember though, that your body will only absorb as much protein as it needs, and no more.

those numbers from the RDI are for the sedentary individual not for athletes.

the more exercise that a person gets the higher the rate of muscle protein turnover in the muscle cell. this also means that the utilization rate of protein will be increased. I recommend the minimum of 1-1.5 grams of protein per lb of lean body mass but in general the calories should be close to 40% protein, 40% carbohydrates and 20% fats

and that value of 20 g per hour is so inaccurate. there is no such maximum amount of protein that can be utilized. the amount will vary from person to person. the amount of LBM that a person has, the daily level of activity, type of activities, etc. all dictate how much protein "that" person needs and can utilize.

1gram to 1.5 grams of protein per body weight no more then 40-50 some say 40 some say 50 can be absorbed I always do 40. Take in 40 grams of protein every 2 hours. I also have been trying 40 grams of whey protein before bed seems to work well.
