Actually, you're paying a high premium for convenience (if you buy all Bose products) and small size with Bose for $5k. There are so many other (much better) choices out there for that price, it's really a no-brainer with some proper guidance.

For example, Pioneer Elite makes superior receivers and DVD players, paired with an Hsu Research speaker system.

Or a Denon receiver and DVD player with a Definitive Tech speaker system.

Or an Arcam and Silverline Audio home theater system. Really, no comparison.

Bose is probably the most recognised name in loudspeakers today . Back in the late 60's early 70's a small speaker appeared in HI FI stores . It was called the BOSE 901.The speaker enclousure was tiangular in shape .The front of the enclousure housed 1 full range 4 inch paper driver the rear contained 8 full range4 inch. paper drivers 4 on each panel which was the triangle side. They could be driven with a powerful amplifier and sound extremely loud without distortion. Dr Bose based his design on the principle that in a live performance we hear more of the reflected sound than the direct sound. Therefore with the 901 close to a rear wall the sound from the speakers is mainly reflected off the wall.
This arangement was supposed to simulate a live performance.
Over the years the original 901 was improved upon to try to sound even better.

The reason i mention this is because Bose was genuinely trying to make good speakers.
The sound of the Bose was unlike any other speaker at that time. There were mixed feelings as to the way it sounded. Some folks liked the spaciousness the sound gave others prefered the more conventional sound.

I am quite sure that until the advent of home theatre most people have never heard the name unless they are hi fi enthuisiasts. The same goes for the majority of other hi fi equipment. These components have now become available because of home theater and now there is another market to sell their equipment.

Bose also seized the opportunity to sell their gear but unfortunately the quality has suffered . They see an unsuspected public who doesn't really know what hifidelity sound is like. So they mass produce their products with cheap components dressed up to look like really top gear. They spend an enormous amount of money on advertising to get people in .In a demonstration between a Bose speaker and say a speaker made in England, the Bose will sound more lively and louder than the other speaker so they buy it and spread the word how good Bose is .Hifidelity sound is not about brightness and loudness.
Sorry i took so long but there was no other way to explain it.

Bose? Dont make me laff! Its hi priced, low quality junk! Only people with lots of money and little knowledge of audio buy them! Its simply a status symbol for the unknowing! I spent a good part of my life working on audio equipment and Bose is the biggest joke out there among audio connoisseurs

No. Bad deal.
Bose Acoustimass systems are grossly over-priced and are not competitive with systems half that price.
