Rev 13:17 so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name.
Rev 13:18 This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.

Before the invention of figures by the Arabs, in the tenth century, letters of the alphabet were used for numbers. The Greeks in the time of Homer, or soon after, are thought by some to have assigned to their letters a numerical value corresponding to their order in the alphabet. If you are familiar with the Greek of the New Testament, an argument can be made that the 666 is an allusion to Emperor Nero. Just as easily an argument can be made that the 666 refers to a "Latin Power" or, the Roman Catholic Church, Julius Caeser Atheus, Luther, and others.

As you can see from the above, there is no consensus on the interpretation.

Recently, many people speculated that there was a connection to June 6, 2006 - 06/06/06. However, in Revelation chapter 13, the number 666 identifies a person, not a date. Revelation 13:18 tells us, "This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666." Somehow, the number 666 will identify the antichrist. For centuries Bible interpreters have been trying to identify certain individuals with 666. Nothing is conclusive. That is why Revelation 13:18 says the number requires wisdom. When the antichrist is revealed (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4), it will be clear who he is and how the number 666 identifies him.

In antient Jesus times the Roman Empire was in charge over the most part of the world including were jesus lived. The Romans had their own law consisting of many different Gods. When Jesus walked the Earth many Jews at the time would talk about jesus and the Empire, however, people who spoke about Jesus or the Roman Empire were arrested or killed. So people began to speak using codes and 666 was used to talk about the Emporor himself thats why these days 666 is asociated with the devil as the thy are Evil, to the Jews.

The apostle John tells his first-century audience that with “wisdom” and “insight” they can “calculate" the number of the beast, for it is man’s number. His number is 666” (Revelation 13:18).

For example, scholars who believe that the Book of Revelation refers to historical people and events argue that the number represents Nero.[11] This hypothesis was first presented by Friedrich Engels. In Hebrew gematria, every letter has a corresponding number. Summing these numbers gives a numeric value to a word or name. In Hebrew, "Nero Caesar" is spelled “נרון קסר,” pronounced "Neron Kaiser." Adding the corresponding values yields 666

Nero was a brutal Roman ruler who massacred Christians and used them as human torches.

Rev 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
Rev 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
