Starry Night over the Rhone (September 1888) is one of Vincent van Gogh's paintings of Arles at night; it was painted at a spot on the banks of river which was only a minute or two's walk from the Yellow House on the Place Lamartine which Van Gogh was renting at the time. The night sky and the effects of light at night provided the subject for some of his more famous paintings, including Cafe Terrace at Night (painted earlier the same month) and the later canvas from Saint-Rémy, The Starry Night.

I will borrow an idea from Dave Hollowell, my figure painting professor at the University of CA at Davis. He commented to me once that Van Gogh seemed to be trying to draw with paint. Look at his drawings, and back at his paintings. I think Van Gogh had a novel form of painting, and "Starry Night" seems to be one of the strongest pieces of evidence for that. He was not a Classical painter, nor was he an impressionist -he had his own style.

Although I agree that movement is a big one, but I would also say that light (color) is arguably the main . Being of the post-impressionist movement, VanGogh's primary focus would be to highlight light and especially color.
