The Safe Haven Law allows a distressed parent to surrender an unwanted infant safely, legally and confidentially. It enables the parents to avoid arrest or prosecution for abandonment, requires no names or records, permits babies less than 72
hours old to be surrendered to staff at any hospital emergency room or designated County site, and provides the newborn access to needed medical care.

In San Francisco, it's called "Safe Surrender". Basically designated safe surrender sites (usually hospital emergency rooms and sometimes, fire houses) are places where a baby (up to 3 days old) can be dropped off with NO questions, no names will be taken down.

CA's Safe Surrender law was passed state wide by Governor Davis in 2001. Different cities and counties can designate their own safe surrender sites. By default, it's ONLY hospital emergency rooms.

A parent can be charged if the baby was left anywhere else, usually with child endangerment, abandonment, and other felonies, though usually such cases are rarely fully prosecuted (unless the baby died, of course, then all bets are off).

Again the Safe Haven law varies by state. Some states, such as Hawaii and Alaska, do not have the safe haven law. many states only allow you 3 days while others (North Dakota) allow you up to 365 days. Most don't require that you drop off the baby at a hospital or fire station but just require you give the baby to police, medical, or fire personnel.

Safe Haven. Most fire departments and hospitals. They usually have signs outside the door.
