You can, but I suggest you don't. Even if there not bleeding yet, the surgery can cause major hemorrhaging. The blood vessels are all swollen and thinner. Plus the anesthesia puts more of a strain on them. Just try to wait it out and keep her safe from those nasty boys! She'll thank you for it later.

Yes, you can have her spayed. However, it usually costs a bit more, as it is sometimes more difficult. Your vet will be able to tell you the pros and cons.
Most veterinarians prefer to delay spaying a dog until she has been out of estrus for a month or so. And, since a recently spayed dog may still be attractive to males, performing the surgery during heat won't do anything to keep the neighbors' dogs out of your yard. The best thing for your dog's health is to keep her safe inside for now and to have your veterinarian perform surgery in a month or so.

this site says that it is a myth that dogs should not be spayed while in heat> http://www.friendsofanimals.org/programs/spay-neuter/dont-delay.html
So, you should just trust your vet's recommendation.

Totally safe to spay a dog while in heat, a lot has also to do with what stage is she in heat? The beginning or towards the end. The spay may cost more due to the use of lasers to stop the bleeding of engorged blood vessels. A good vet will have no hesitations spay a ***** in heat.

Techically it could be done, but there would be risks that I would not personally take.

I have cared for female Labs that had the puppies delivered by caesarian section and then a hysterectomy done immediately after the pups were removed.
I have to admit that the female seems to take forever to recover from the surgery. Caring for the puppies on top of the surgery seems to be a heavy load to impose on the female dog.
When a female is in heat, the arteries , veins and the uterus itself are engorged ( swollen). This is natures way of preparing the females internal organs for conception and maintenance of the foetus(s) . This engorgement of the vessels etc. means that the risk of hemorrhage is greater than it would be in the pre:heat state.

I just had one of my dogs spayed , but, I made sure to wait 6 weeks after her heat ended to assure that she was fully recoved from the heat.

Surgery is surgery, and, if at all possible, the female should be in tip top shape for it. The female needs all the pluses in her favor that she can get.

Good luck with your decision!

you can still spey a dog when it is in heat but it is not widely practiced. Most vets make you wait. The best amount of time to wait is 6 - 8 weeks after she stops bleeding. This gives the uterus and the blood vessels surrounding it a chance to go back to normal before removing the uterus. There are many more risks when she is in season and there is a higher chance of her bleeding out. It is a safe surgery if done when the season is well over.

It depends on the dog, the vet, and how long they've been in heat. Some won't do it at all, but my parent's beagle was in heat and the vet did it anyways. They said they usually charge extra, but as my parent's had been going to the same vet for years (with diff dogs of course) the vet knew my parent's couldn't afford a higher price and waived the fee. Look around for a vet who will do it, you should be able to find someone.
But that does spark another question...vets not wanting to spay while in heat.

Anyone that tells you yes has been misinformed, while it is possible to spay a dog during their estrus it can be dangerous and isn't recommended by reputable veterinarians.

Surgery performed during estrus increases the risk of hemorrhage both during and following surgery due to blood vessel dilation and increased blood flow to the uterus during this time.

I think you should wait the first estrus (cycle) out and take care of it once she is finished.

Most vets won't spay a dog while she is IN heat. But yes, you can have her spayed after she comes out of it. Call your vet. :)

Yes you can spay her but it will be more expensive because her uterus is swollen and the procedure is a bit more risky. If you can wait it out I would recommend doing so.
