I find that when I think about my own death or myself committing suicide, it has a calming effect and many times leaves me feeling content or even happy. Could this be caused by a chemical imbalance in my brain or is it normal to think and feel this way? Also, should I get help or try and ride this out. I have been like this for about 5 years and so far it has not affected me.

While it's probably not healthy to fantasize about taking your own life, possibly the reason why you feel calm when visualizing death is that you're comfortable with it. A lot of people hate the idea of death.

I would say as long as you aren't a danger to yourself, it's normal. If it doesn't affect your daily routine, it's normal. If you aren't obsessing over how you might kill youself, it's normal.

If it's not affecting you then I wouldn't be worried about it.

Personally, I have a theory that in order to be happy people need something to worry about. If nothing can go wrong, how do you know when something goes right? So a healthy awareness of death, and possibly worry of suicide might not be the most unnatural thing.

Ofcourse, if you are actually considering suicide, that's a different story. If it's a serious concern, there's no reason why you can't see a therapist, they've helped me.

OK suicide idealation is the general term. You say it isn't effecting you but then why ask? You don't mention if there are other things going on such as: mood shifts, self injury, rage problems, seeing things that are or are not there, depression, hypomania, etc. Sometimes when a lot of stress is present in our lives there are those who find comfort in being out of the situation. The fight or flight method of problem solving so to speak. This sounds like flight in many ways. I would try to seek help if it is bothersome and you wish to move on to healthier thoughts. There might be more to it then meets the eye at first glance even to you. Have your friends expressed concerns over things you've said or your actions? It would be helpful if there was more detail to go by then what you posted.

Well, it could be a chem. imbalance. But, I would seek some advice to be on the safe side.If those thoughts calm you ;you dont want the actual acts to take hold and be a comfort to you-for instance, the suicide part.
Never hurts to get some prof.help.
