This is an 'old wives tale'. There's no truth to it. The only way this would prevent a cat straying is if he's too busy licking the butter off his feet to go wandering the neighborhood.... and if you have the free time needed to stand next to the cat and reapply the butter every two minutes you're luckier than me!

Keep your cat indoors. He'll be much safer.

It doesn't stop your cat from straying. It's just an old wives' tale. The only reason is that it may stop your cat from straying from the house during the time it is busy licking the butter off its paws. After which, it's anyone's call really.

well i heard that you walk the cat around the house and leave the butter on its feet so it can lick it off. once it licks it off the smell will stay w/ it and if it does stray then it will smell the butter around it's house and go back home♥! i dunno, thats what i heard!
