The seat cover was stored in a very dusty drafty shed. Dusting didn't remove enough to keep it from ruining a pair of light colored pants.

Most of these seat covers are just lycra and can be cleaned with almost anything. You culd put it in the washing machine, but I doubt it needs that unless you spilled grape juice all over it. Just try using a mild soap in the sink first. If that doesn't work, you can get more aggressive.

Gel seat covers aren't that good, it's almost impossible to get them to stop moving around. I have one and I think I used it for two rides of about 20 miles each, then bought a new saddle. They feel OK for short rides, but you don't really need gel padding for those, so they're a bit superfluous. I do use gel gloves, I find that they absorb the shocks from the road, and are comfortable for long rides. I have several pairs, some fingerless for the summer, a waterproof pair for in the rain and an insulated pair for when it's cold. I always wear gloves when cycling, if you fall off it's your hands that you use to protect yourself, and you don't want gravel rash on your hands.
