When we bought a house years ago, it was covered with carpets, first thing we did was change it too hardwood and never regret it, you can always but chick Carpets (if you can buy hand made like Armenian carpets it is better and you can find it trough the Internet, if not there are cheep but very beautiful carpets you can choose from).
any way it is much easier to clean the hare wood floor than carpet. But at the end it is you that have to decide.

I prefer hardwood for a few reasons:

1) If you spill something, it's easier to wipe it up off of hardwood.
2) You can use area rugs in places where you want extra padding, and you can change these easily when you change the decor of your room. They are also easily removed for cleaning.
3) Carpet collects dust, no matter how much you vacuum
4) Hardwood can be refinished when it gets dull and scratched, and it will look like new again. You have to totally replace carpet.
5) Hardwood doesn't go out of style. Some carpets (shag, anyone?) do.

No kids, but what about pets? Pets shed, and allergies can flare without a warning. Hardwood floors are easy to keep clean with a Swiffer Sweeper & a Wet Jet (and they're much quieter than a vacuum cleaner to boot!)

Carpet collects dirt, which will wear down the fibers, but that dirt will work its way down through the padding onto the subfloor. So every time you vacuum, you're really just getting the top layer. It also collects mold spores (think pollen season or wet weather.)

I only use area rugs beside the bed, at the main entrance to my home, beside the shower, and at the kitchen counter. Wash them once a week and you can keep the dust and dirt down!

Note of caution - those area rugs with thick non skid backing can stick to the floors. I know this from renting a house out - the tenant never moved it and I had to actually scrape the rubber backing off the floor.

Fewer allergys associated with hardwood. If I lived in a cold climate, I would choose carpet, though. Can't stand a cold floor.

Hardwood: adds value to the house, better quality, looks warm, easy to clean for spills, and has less allergies than carpets.
If you are concerned with being cold during the frigid months, add a rug

You are free to choose. What is your preference? hardwood is a little more in vogue at the moment, I believe.

hardwood- regardless. It is so much easier to maintain- cleaning wise- and it lasts so much longer. Its quite durable as well, even if you do have children- or pets.
