Please consider that a human being is made up of three parts, a body, a spirit, and a soul. Death is when the three split up.
The body is the physical part. At death, the body must return to the earth, where it came from.
The spirit is what animates the body, and lets it move about, breathe, eat, and reproduce. God gave that spirit to the body, and at death, the spirit returns to God.
The soul is the essence of you. It is what makes you a unique individual, capable of choice, decisions, and rational thinking. The soul, at death, must go forth and answer for the life it led. Did it make right decisions, or wrong ones? Did it live a sinful life, or a life free of sin? Did it choose God, or something else?
The body may suffer in the time leading up to the death. The spirit does not suffer. The soul may indeed suffer if it made bad choices, and failed to choose God. Basically, you get what you choose.

There is suffering in physical death. We have the actual pain from a life that stops. The emotional pain (grief) of relatives and friends with relationships terminated suddenly.
The worst suffering is when someone dies as a reprobate and goes to Hell. The worst punishment in Hell is the eternal separation from God. Jesus suffered this punishment for 3 hours while nailed to the cross.

Read the Bible and see. There are three places he may go. One of those places has not occurred yet but will in due time.
Heaven, Sheol... Hell is yet to come.

Death is absense of spirit from the body. He may go back to God. The dead know nothing.

Dead is dead, that simple.
Where does the light go when a candle is snuffed out?
Same thing.
