I have a Sony car stereo with detachable faceplate that has a jack for ipods or mp3 auxilliary input. When I plug in my ipod, the sound only comes out of the front right speaker. And I have to plug the ipod to the cigarette lighter to get any decent volume (even if the internal battery to the ipod is full). My ipod works well otherwise and plays in stereo with either headphones or plugged into a home stereo.
Is there anyway to fix it or do i have to buy a new car stereo?

The car stereo plays CDs in stereo and the FM tuner plays in stereo out of all speakers.

There 're many types of aux cables, there 's chance that you're using either the wrong cable or a defective one. Try using a cable that have 3 black lines in the metal tip those are the stereo ones, if not then you have a mono cable. If still have the problem then maybe your head unit is malfunctioning.

Either the plug is broken or you're using a mono cable. Make sure that there are three separate metal sections at the tip of the cable. If there are only two, than it won't work for stereo sound. However, even if you're using the wrong cable, you should still get sound from the rear right speaker. It would work for both speakers on that side of the car. Check the settings on your radio as far as balance and fader for the aux input. Then listen to another source and listen for the back right speaker specifically. You may have a blown speaker back there.

Unfortunately it's most likely a problem with the plug on the Sony deck; I've seen this several times on Sony units with the front input jacks. You should try a different cable just because it's cheap, easy, and might work; but odds are you'll need to have the deck serviced.
I suspect that the right rear speaker is working as well, but it's just not as noticeable. If you're correct, and all four speakers work with other functions but only one works with the Aux input, then that makes it certain that the Sony deck is the problem. (Make sure your right rear speaker really is working with the other functions; it's not unusual for a non-working rear speaker to go unnoticed when the other 3 are playing).

Probably a bad cord.
They're not that strong. A decent "tug" on it will break the teeny-tinny wires inside.
A cable is a lot cheaper than a stereo.
