The biggest obstacle to Michael's success right now is Michael himself, and he has not been afraid to admit that.

He is not a poor race team manager, he simply took on a bigger team than he could adequately fund. If anything he has put more effort into getting his other drivers into races than he has getting himself in, and this has hurt him badly. Again, this isn't anything Michael wouldn't admit to.

As far as the SUV accident is concerned, even driving instructors have been guilty of inattentive driving at times, as have highway patrol officers, accident investigators, and, yes, other race car drivers.

Michael Waltrip will rebound, although it could take a while. His sponsors are getting nervous, and he is already being forced to make difficult decisions. Starting the season in a points hole didn't help, but as long as Michael doesn't get discouraged he still has a chance.

As for getting help from his big brother, the best DW can do is give Michael moral support, which I'm sure he is more than happy to do.

Mikey is a prime example of how the face of NASCAR has changed because of sponsor influences. These influences are reflected in rules (top 35 teams being locked into races and even the chase format) and the way drivers race nowdays (less aggressive driving and points racing). Before Mikey became such a sponsor whore and concentrated a little more on driving he was at least average. Now he is spread so thin with media commitments and running a team he has no chance for any success as a driver. Unfortunately for some of his main sponsors (NAPA, Dominoes, Burger King etc) they bought into his apparent likeability and initial charm. After awhile, when all you can do is plug your sponsors on the various shows your on (instead of by exposure during the races) the appeal wears off. In the past, a driver with his talent would not be able to make the crossover to ownership and all the other things he's involved with. He has merely capitalized on marketability. His time in the sun is about done and even DW won't be able to right this sinking ship. In the report on jayski it said that the accident was around 1:50 a.m. and that he left the scene, according to an eyewitness. He was less than a mile from home and when the cops got there at 2:30 a.m. nobody was home. Now I know Mikey is big into running, how long did it take him to get home and where was Buffy at 2:30? When an officer returned at 8:00 a.m. he was there. He says he fell asleep at the wheel but you have to think he had been drinking. NAPA will not make it to the end of the season with Mikey's race team at this rate.

I dont think that Darrel could pull him out of this one. Common sense tells you that you need to report an accident no matter how stupid you feel about it and even if you weren't drunk and were cut up and had a witness see you and talk to you and call 911 and have no care in the world and wakl home. I mean seriously.. I bet he gets probation and lots of community service. Then again I wonder if his SUV was driving like his race car and if it was then it wasn't going very fast. I think Toyota needs to invest some more money into figuring out why they can't make races and then invest some money into fixing the problems instead of just sitting here and doing nothing and then Michael is going to get a talk from NASCAR about how he's not being a very good role model and such. I can't believe he would fall asleep at the wheel and he's a NASCAR driver. I wonder if he's ever done that at a race. Probably not.

Mikey always wants to be in the spotlight and now he is for awhile. He couldn't do it in NASCAR but he sure can when he's own his own. The Waltrip's will never be the same. I do admit that Darrell was a pretty good driver, back in his time, but Mikey will never fill those shoes.

I have seen Waltrip so sloshed on TV that I suspect he has a serious alcohol problem and it probably had something to do with the wreck. I don't know what Toyota was thinking when they signed him up as a driver. He has never won outside Daytona and Talladega which are races where NASCAR mandates changes to the cars. Just because his brother was a great driver doesn't mean Mikey is one too.

the SUV was a toyota and that's why it wrecked????
As for walking home, that is a definite sign of he was drunk and didn't want to be caught. A sober person would have called someone for help or flagged down another car.

My stepdad wrecked a car, walked home and wouldn't answer the door when the cops knocked. Why? He was drunk and the next day he went to rehab, thank heaven.

Is it drinking? I dont know. I would like to say more that running a 3 car team, while driving is taking a toll on him. If im him, I stop driving now, and hand the 55 to someone.

Mikey suffered scratches to his arms, hands and face and cuts on his finger, said he fell asleep at the wheel right before he wrecked his Toyota Land Cruiser early Saturday morning. He left the scene of the accident and walked the rest of the way home.
