Why does Niaspan cause you to turn beet red and get all hot in the face?

Its supposed to lower your cholesterol not turn you into a beet. Whats the deal?

Niacin stimulates prostaglandin (a hormone that affects many different body functions), which causes blood vessels to abruptly dilate and fill with blood - hence the flushing
a redness, mostly on the face, neck and chest and/or back, which is caused by increased blood flow
