Baptism replaces old testament circumcision. It's not just a symbol -- it is a covenant between God and his people, extending, like circumcision, to infants as part of the entire households baptized in the early church. It is an ingrafting into Christ, pointing to the forgiveness of sins and tied so closely to salvation that 1 Peter 3:21 addresses it as such.
Do Christians have to be baptized? No, they want to be baptized. Desperately.

being baptised is a symbolic gesture, you are going down under the water as a sinner but you come up clean.you are letting others know that you are no longer living for the devil but you are living for the lord.

Actually, to be saved, there are things modern day Christians are supposed to do. By modern day, I mean after the first Pentacost following the cricifiction (about 50 days later). That is when the Church was started.
The things to do are:
Hear - Romans 10:17
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.
Believe - Hebrews 11:6
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
Repent - Acts 17:30
In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.
Confess - Romans 10:9-10
That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
Baptism - Acts 2:38
Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Remain Faithful - Revelation 2:10
Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.

I don't believe that you have to be baptized to get into Heaven. Jesus did it - symbolizes the washing away of our sins.
As for the circumsion, this was started to distingish the Jews from the Gentiles in the Old Testament. Has nothing to do with salvation or getting into Heaven...I believe it is recommended for health reasons.

baptised yes, circumsized no. Baptism is a sign that you are leaving your old life and entering a new life in Christ. Although I reccommend circumcision at birth purely for the health benefits. You have a 60% less chance of contracting HIV if you are circumsized.

Baptism is not a requirement for salvation, some preach that it is, but the scriptures clearly teach that it is not. (Thief on the cross, and other examples). Circumcision was a 'rite' of the Hebrews, and signifies the covenant of Abraham. Jesus taught that Christians (His followers) were of a circumcised heart. The book of Hebrews is a good source to examine this and other practices.

No. Baptism is merely a symbol of your new life in Christ. But it is not required to go to heaven, even though there are some religions that believe it is. However, the Bible never states that.
