I don't understand but tonight i got into a heated argument with my teacher who didn't like my view on tipping. I said tips are earned by going above and beyond the customers expectations...she said tips should be received regardless because some people don't make alot of money? What do you think? So does that mean I need to tip everyone the waiter, waitress, nail salon, hair salon, pizza guy, newspaper guy, landscaper, i could go on. I think that it is ridiculous to assume a tip should be granted especially when now adays things are so expensive i don't see how people can afford it.

I agree with you. People take the job KNOWING they are not getting paid very much and EXPECT people to tip them. They should find another job if they don't like the tips.

I don't think most people in those types of jobs expect to be tipped regardless of the job they do-if so they are wrong. The amount of the tip should be commensurate with the level of service-including zero for poor service. I wouldn't get into arguments about it though-for some reason many people have strong feelings about this-probably they had a service job and got crummy tips!

I agree w/ your teacher, these people you tip are serving you, trying to please you, so they might get a tip. Some provide better service that other, better service= better tips, if no one brought your food, then yeah, no service, no tip.
They only get a couple dollars an hour for working harder than alot of people do. If you took time out of your day to bring something to someone, you didn't even know, wouldn't be kinda nice to get something for it? Think of the pizza guy who goes out in the cold or when it's raining, just to bring you a hot pizza, or the newspaper guy who gets out at 4:00 in the am, and delivers papers, he has to sort them out, stuff each one w/ ads, and roll them all up, one by one, rain or snow, just so you can read the latest news.
I can't afford to always tip alot, but always make sure I have enough for a tip, even if it's a small one, BEFORE I order a pizza, or ask someone else to wait on me. it's just a way to say "thankyou"

Tell me this, why do you expect to get a paycheck at the end of your 40 hr week?
And let me ask you this, do you know if you have enough money to make ends meet?
When you worked in a tip position, you're at the mercy of your patrons. They don't tip you, you don't eat the week. It's not they expect the tip. It's if they provide you the service. You should tip them.
I work as a blackjack dealer, I make 5.15/ hr and the rest of the salary I make comes from the gratuities of others. For another example, if you're a waiter in the state of Utah or Pennsylvannia, you make 2.13 an hr. And that doesn't go a long way.
I take it that you don't work for your tips. But see what other's go thru. Maybe when you take a tip position, you'll understand what it is like to make ends meet.
By the way, if you paid 300.00 to get your hair colored. Why didn't you just go to Walmart or Kmart to get hair dye for a cheaper price. and if you come out looking like a clown, the TIP is don't whine about paying 300.00 to get your hair colored.

if the service sucks no tip. end of story. but if the service was ok then its about 10% of my amount. if the person went above and beyond they get a higher tip. i love to tip people but if the service sucked *ss like late food, wrong food, kept me waiting. etc... none to any at all tip. or i'll leave a bunch of loose change.
a tip is for great service to reward those who have helped serve our needs. not those who just dont care.
hair salons and nail salons too. if you like what you got then tip. if you didnt dont. and dont go back there if you hate it so much you wont tip them

It's called being a member of society. Nobody would work for $2.33 an hour if they didn't get tips.
I agree it's dumb and they should just add it to the cost of everything (which would go up if everybody was like you and didn't tip) but it's how the system works right now.

A tip should be given only when you feel the person serving you deserved it for reasons like serving you well or going the extra mile. I personally don't think tipping is necessary because the person is already paid for a job that he HAS to do.

If you are going to eat out you should tip. Waiters and Waitresses depend on tips for their livlihood. This is how it is all over the US. If you don't want to tip, then don't eat out. Here is the break down:
Exceptional service is at least 20%.
Good service is 15%
Mediocre service is 10%
Terrible service gets no tip.
If you do take out in a restaurant - you are STILL supposed to tip 10%.

If you don't feel the need to tip, then don't accept services from people who feel entitled to being tipped.
