If they are above the age of consent (and I assume any college undergrad would be), then it isn't illegal. It is, however, highly unethical and against the policies of every university I've ever heard of. The 27 year old would be in great danger of getting fired if caught.

Not illegal, debatably immoral, definitely unethical.
The problem with teacher/student relationship is that the teacher is in a position of power over the student. Even if the student is the one that makes the first move, the relationship can never be free from that complication.
If the teacher is pressuring the student to have sex by endangering the student's grade in the class, or if the student is offering sex in an effort to get a better grade, the relationship is obviously completely wrong. If there is genuine attraction there, just wait till the student is no longer in that teacher's class. If it's real, it can wait one semester.

Well there is nothing illegal about dating that student, but it would be ethically wrong. Society places educators a level higher on the moral scale then others. As a tradition educators , whether they are teachers, instructors or professors, need to maintain a certain level.
but as I said there is nothing illegal, esp if the person is no longer your student. Just remember the schools do not permit such activities and it is grounds enough for dismissal sometimes.

As long as the student is 18 or older it isn't illegal, just unprofessional and yes, frowned upon.

Why do you ask? What do the laws say about doing such things. In prison, when other inmates find out that another inmate is incarcerated for such things (they call it baby rape) doing time in jail isn't their only problem. Other inmates will dish out some things such a person won't soon forget. Immoral, sinful, illegal, stupid, -all fit.

If it is consentual and the student is 18 yrs. old, no, it's not illegal but definitely unethical. Bending one rule will lead to breaking how many more???
