runs out of thier property and chases or bothers other who are walking thier dogs on leash?
I'm starting to get really frustrated with the people in my neighborhood. I walk my dogs on leash, and then have to try to "get away" from these loose dogs while the owners just stand there.
I'm not even nice anymore. One of my dogs is dog aggressive, which makes these encounters serious, stressful, and dangerous.
Why do people choose to just watch this happen until I finally have to yell at them to get their dog?

It seems like no matter what "route" I take, I have this problem.
I know I have options to deter these dogs, but sheesh! I told my family I was going to buy a big conversion van, fill it with crates, and take these dogs all into animal control myself!
...and don't even get me started on all the loose/stray cats!!!

I think it is a because of ignorance and because they think have friendly dogs and their dogs just want to play. You know the same reason people think it is ok to take their dogs to dog parks and let them run with unknown dogs. Didn't you know your the jerk because you have mean dogs?
I know exactly how you feel because I have the same problem and I also have a dog that does not like other dogs, I quit being nice when my dog ended up having to have surgery because of someone else's friendly dog attacking my 8 month old pup that was on leash, which is why he became dog aggressive. Now I tell people get your dog or it will get hurt, I get dirty looks and some rude comments but all I care about is there were no dog fights.

People do this because they are 1) stupid, 2) careless and 3) not aware that it is going to cost them, big time.
In addition to a leash for your pup, you need to carry a small camera. Then when the dog starts toward you, take a photo. I am sure that will get the attention of the owner. As animal control says, "a picture is proof", and definitely worth a thousand words, and often worth a fine for the offender.
You have already informed these morons that your dog is aggressive. You are obeying the leash laws. Be sure to set the date, time on the camera. Call animal control, make the complaint, show the photo. There is nothing like having to shell out bucks to wake up a dummy. Ask my neighbor.

These people that do this with their dogs just don't care. However they are the first ones to deny it when someone gets bit by their dog and ends up in court and being sued.
Start taking pictures of the dogs and note down the address of the home it came from. Then report them to the police or animal control. You can also contact your local news station and get an investigative reporter to check it out and make it public.
Is everyone in your neighborhood waiting for a kid to be attacked by one of the dogs before doing something about it?
Who knows, you might be the one that gets attacked by one of the dogs.. So be careful!
Good Luck

Sound's like maybe you should let your neighbors know that your dog isn't friendly with other dogs (which is why you use a leash) and that they really should try to keep better control of their animals or keep them tied up when outside so that their dog doesn't get bitten. Or you could try walking your dogs on a different route where there aren't so many irresponsible neighbors.

Go buy a can of mace. Then rather than yell at them to get their dog after they run at you why don't you yell "I have mace and will use it if your dog confronts mine."AS THE DOG IS RUNNING AT YOU.
A walk is supposed to be relaxing not stressful and people should not be so ignorant and disrespectful to people passing by.Nor should they be laxidaisical enough to assume every dog passing on a leash will appreciate being charged by their dog.
Trouble is being invited here.Don't let them put the responsibility on you.If anyone gives you any crap you tell them your dog has issues caused by other dogs charging it and it cannot be broken if others will not control their animals. You have every right to walk down the street in peace. You are not breaking any laws but they are by allowing their dogs to run rampant off leash.

I have the same problem when I walk my pack.
There is a harmless spray available that is citronella based and sprays about 10 feet. It is being used more and more by folks like postal carriers or delivery people as most dogs hate the smell but it is harmless to them.
I have tried this stuff and it works wonders.
If someone gives you a hard time you can fire back with the fact you would not have to use it if they kept their dog under controll like you do.
Good luck

I hear you on that one. I hate walking my two small dogs to only having to either try and walk faster or pick them up cause the dog that runs after us is not being watched by his or her owner. I am to the point i avoid certain streets now cause of that. I know i shouldn't have to but i just rather do that than have to go through the craziness of not knowing how the dogs will react to one another.

I have often wonder this as well. Lazy, or uneducated in dog owner responsibilty.
We have one lady who just keeps yelling "Sashi, cooookie" over and over as he is two blocks away and still running. And he is half Saluki.
And, another side note, last summer, the police were called to a house, a non-emergency call, and when the dog ran out, the officer took it as threatening and shot and killed the dog. You would think that would stop some people and it hasn't. Go figure.

th3 said it exactly! People think awww, isn't that cute, my dog fluffy is playing with your dog....It's just complete ignorance on the people's part. I have a dog like that too, he's an alpha dog and he hates small dogs or any small animal for that matter, and if it's another male dog he'll do the size up and if the other shows the slightest bit of aggression, fight's on. Somebody at the vets office once let her dog come up by mine, and I tried pulling mine away a bit, but there wasn't any room on my side. I finally looked at the lady and told her my dog would rip her dog's throat out-and he would too lol, she just gave me huffy look and moved. I would just automatically yell out to the people, my dog will bite yours, better get him out of our way. Your dog's on a leash, on the street/sidewalk, there's isn't. Guess who's at fault?

There not responsible pet owners i 'd say !! That is annoying and i think some people like to see there dog fight another dog i beleive !! They don't stop and think about or care if a dog gets hurt ! Or about the vet bill they will get !!! if i were you i'd find another place to walk my dog, away from these owners !! Just find another spot to walk your dog and you want have to put up with them anymore !! Good luck !
