He is an angel. All angels were created by God long before He created the earth as we know it. This includes the "fallen angels" such as Lucifer or Satan. The fallen angels number 1/3 of all the angels created.
God created them for His service. They were never human beings although they can appear as humans from time to time in special situations. God will never create more angels, He has all He needs. And no human from earth to what I know has ever become an angel...no matter how cute they may be.
Gabriel was the angel who told Mary that she would be with child from Jehovah God. Actually Gabriel is an arc-angel or the top ranking angel.

In the New Testament, Gabriel is the angel who reveals to Zechariah that John the Baptist will be born to Elizabeth, and who visits Mary to reveal that she will give birth to Jesus. Gabriel's visit to Mary in the Gospel of Luke is often called "The Annunciation" (Luke 1:26-38), an event that is celebrated on March 25 in the Roman Catholic church. It is also commemorated as the "First Joyful Mystery" of the rosary.
Gabriel may also be the angel that visited Joseph. After learning about Mary's pregnancy, Joseph considered calling off the marriage, but "an angel of the Lord" appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him that the conception was caused by the Holy Spirit. (Matt 1:18-25)
According to later legend, he is also the unidentified angel in the Book of Revelation (the Apocalypse of John) who blows the horn announcing the Judgment Day. To both Catholics and the Orthodox, he is St. Gabriel the Archangel, known to some as the patron saint of communications workers. With Michael and Raphael, his feast day is September 29.

In Christianity, Gabriel is one of the higher "ranking" angels, and one of the very few named in the Bible. The others that I remember who are named are Michael and Lucifer(aka Satan who was originally God's highest ranking angel). Angels are beings created by God, and are able to look human. Other than these two similarities, angels and humans are different creatures.

Like Michael, Gabriel appears to work for both God's side and the other side.
Michael is the archangel on God's side (Jude 9) but the being speaking to Daniel in chapter 10 says that Michael is "one of" the chief princes, as in Islam. Daniel was written hundreds of years before Islam began.
I don't know what Gabriel's affiliation is. Angels are messengers. Demons are distributors of fates and fortunes. The sequence would possibly be determined so as to run the engine of Satan's devotees in a smooth way, with those in the know picking up the sequence and others who don't believe in Satan being unwitting participants in medical experiments, Nazi concentration camp style.

An angel of God that is still an angel as far as we all know. I think that any angels that saw the day of Satan's fall are not stupid enough to fall into doing the same thing and being banished as well.

Gabriel is one of the Lord's most trusted messengers. He brought the news of her impending delivery to Mary the mother of Christ. Perhaps you ask if he is fallen because of those "Prophecy" movies with Christopher Walken? I've often thought that if there are lawyers in Heaven, then Gabriel should sue for slander.

Lena, Gabriel is one of the few angels in the bible who was named. He is God's messenger angel. He appeared to Mary to announce that God had chosen her to be the mother of Jesus. He also appeared to the prophet Daniel. A beautiful name for a beautiful servant of God.
