I have 4 children, 3 of them girls. We've had to stop by the side of the road for all of them more than once, especially my middle daughter. I always keep 2 blankets in the car along with a good size trash can, tissue, and paper towels. Open the front and back door of your car, stand between them holding a blanket and it makes a pretty private area when it's needed. We've owned a van off and on throughout the years and the trash can has come in handy for more than McDonald's wrappers. We travel quite a bit so I am always prepared for those unexpected emergencies even though our kids are much older now.

My daughter is 3 1/2 and hasn't had to pee on the side of the road or parking lot in about a year. When she was potty training though we did have to stop on the side of the road several times on road trips. And, she has even had to pee in the Walmart parking lot before!

On long trips, I always make her go potty right before she gets in the car and I limit her fluids before and during the trip so that we don't have to stop. However, if she does have to go and can't hold it I just pull over and let her go.

She holds it much better now, but she does get busy and forgets to go and holds it to long now.

If you don't like her going on the side of the road, you could always put a pull-up or diaper on her that way if she does have an accident before you can get to a bathroom it isn't a big mess. I have also done this but not in a long time.

Let's just say, I travel the road from Valdez to Anchorage a lot and there are not many stops along the way for potty breaks.
She always needs to pee somewhere along the way, so I just have a small trash liner and a potty chair. If it's winter, I have it in the back of the suv and if its summer, I put it on the side of the road and block the view of passing vehicles with the doors and my legs. But she is only 6. Bottom line is, if she has to go, let her. Her kidney's and bladder can end up with an infection if you don't. The renal system is more sensitive than most are aware.

I don't have a daughter but I have a 4 year old son. He hasn't yet peed anywhere but a toilet but I'd be willing to let him if needed. My neice and nephew though have peed in a lot on the side of the road. I once went on a road trip with them when she was 6 and he was 4. They had to pee every 5 minutes! My neice went on the side of the road pretty much just in the open with my sister holding her pants so she didn't pee on them. My nephew went on the wall of the gas-station, side of the road twice (he peed on the tire of my sisters car), and we stopped for ice cream so I had to take him to the bushes to pee.

These kids have never been able to hold it! especially my nephew! I wouldn't allow my son to pee in such open area unless a true BIG emergancy. Theres usally a highway reststop every few minutes now anways.

When you gotta go, you gotta go. How many times do you tell your kids to use the bathroom before you leave the house and they say they don't need to go? You tell them to go anyway. It never fails, they still need to use the bathroom not 10 minutes later. And it's not always just to void, sometimes the child has to move the bowels too and this can be an even bigger issue. We can't ask the body to stay on hold forever. I myself can remember being a teenager and my dad had to pull off the road for me to go because I couldn't hold it any longer. and just because I am an adult- doesn't mean my bladder has any more strength or capacity- actually it has less. I have flashed back to my high school years many a time needing to go to the bathroom with none in sight. Only now I have tissues on hand and no alcohol involved!

I don't have a daughter, but I can remember as a child, my parents having to pull off the side of the road so I could "potty". My mom would open the front door and the back door on the passenger side and I would squat down between the car doors. I don't guess she ever thought that oncoming cars could see right under the doors!!!
