It can rupture (its not like it explodes or anything, it just sort of rips).
It can become inflamed and simply rupture from the infection and pressure on the tissue.
You can get hit in the stomach in just the right place by a baseball or football and that could be enough if it was borderline.

Yes, it can rupture. The appendix is a little pouch located at the end of the colon on the lower right side of your abdomen. It can become inflamed and begin to build up large amounts of pus. If the inflammation is severe enough, the pouch can't empty into the colon. It can build up so much pus that it ruptures. It doesn't actually "burst" like a big firecracker going off, but the end result is the same - your peritoneal cavity is suddenly exposed to this pus, which is loaded with germs that quickly causes deadly dangerous infection. If the appendix is not removed and the pus drained AND the infection fought with antibiotics, the rupture of your appendix can kill you within as few as three days. In modern industrialized countries, that's rare, because one of the characteristics of a ruptured appendix is severe bellyache - and I do mean severe! The person KNOWS something is wrong and will seek medical help.

Infection usually causes the appendix to swell and become painful. Should you ignore this pain, the appendix can become so swollen the the ribs and other organs have no place to go and the appendix leaks, more than "bursts". The term "burst" comes from the pop that people feel when the appendix gets the small tear causing the leak as it looks for somewhere to go as it swells.

From Wikipedia:
Appendicitis (or epityphlitis) is a condition characterized by inflammation of the appendix[1]. While mild cases may resolve without treatment, most require removal of the inflamed appendix, either by laparotomy or laparoscopy. Untreated, mortality is high, mainly due to peritonitis and shock.[2] Reginald Fitz first described acute appendicitis in 1886 [3], and it's been recognized as one of the most common causes of the acute abdomen worldwide.
From me:
The appendix is like a little sac, and when you get an infection in there, it swells up until it bursts. When it bursts, little infected pieces contaminate everywhere they go, and it is quite dangerous, unless treated promptly.

A burst appendix is very painful and can lead to serious complications, including death. When the appendix bursts it leaks bacteria from the intestines into the abdominal cavity. This can cause the formation of an abscess or a condition known as peritonitis, which is a serious infection of the abdominal cavity. Before the advent of modern antibiotics this condition often resulted in death. Now the majority of people that have their appendix survive with proper treatment.

Yes, absolutely. It probably burst because the appendix if full of junk which cause infection. This does happen when people don't get medical attention when they are having the problem.

The appendix only bursts when it gets totally infected and ruptures. A persons appendix won't rupture unless it gets infected.

absolutely.
The organ has no real purpose and if removed there are no ill side effects. It is kind of like a tube with one end connected to the cecum (or the very bottom of the large intestine) and one end closed off. So if something gets caught in it or something blocks it up it can become inflamed and rupture and is called appendicitis (although it just has to become enflamed to be called that).
