as we age our bodies produce less melanin....which gives hair colour...so it starts to loose the pigment ( colour) and it starts to turn white....

Its common for elders, or just older people to grow gray or white hair. It sometime can be because of stress, thats what alot of people say when there hair is turing gray, "omg i am soo stressed, look at my hair!" But thats not entirely true.

hair strands only contain so much pigment... with aging and with stress the pigment can be diminished.... its just a natural part of aging.
it can also happen because of trauma. if someone is hit in the head really hard that part of there hair can turn gray, or white in color.

Hair grows white when the color pigment (melanin) ceases to be produced in the hair follicle and small air spaces take its place. Please check out http://useinfo-grayhair.blogspot.com/ for more info.
