I got my body fat percentage taken for softball, and they used a caliper. After they were done, they came up with a number...48. I know that my body fat percentage isn't 48% because that would be completely ridiculous, and I only weigh 120 pounds. Do they convert 48 into a percentage? If so, what would my body fat percentage be? They wouldn't tell me! haha.

Hey,

I'm a dietitian and I've used them. Basically the number they get is a sum of skinfolds, taken at seven main skinfold sites (tricep, bicep, subscap, suprailiac, abdominal, thigh, calf).

This total can be converted into an approximate BF% using one of several proposed formulae. I've attached a reference.

I cannot do the conversion for you without knowing your age and gender. The people who measured you should have been able to do this for you.

However, if you got a number of 48, and this number is the sum of skinfolds, your BF% is probably pretty low. But don't quote me on it ;)

Good luck.

48 is the percentage there is no other conversion...

do you know if they took a 3, 5 or 7 point test?

i've seen women who weigh less than you with numbers close to that. some women who have been yo-yo dieting for a while can lose a lot of muscle mass. there is no correlation with a low bodyweight to having a low body fat percentage. although if you are in high school I would suspect that number is definetly off as that would be highly unusual for a teen girl to have bf that high

Well if they came up with 48%, then they really ought to learn how to use the callipers properly!

Have it tested again by someone that actually knows what they are doing. I don't know how old you are, but a good body fat percentage would be between 18%-28% for a teenage girl.

HTH : )

if you have a decent amount of muscle there is a good chance the measurement was flawed.

also, to women's measurements they always add on about another 10% for breasts, which are comprised of fat.
