and the tensioner and the idler pullies? I got the old timing gear off, but now I can't get the new timing belt over all the gears and pullies no matter how much I wrestle with the belt tensioner. I've loosened the tensioner bolt, put an allen wrench in the hex-hole in the face of the tensioner pulley and turned the pulley to allow maximum clearance for the belt to pass straight through down to the crank gear. I've tried prying the tensioner with screw-drivers away from the belt, prying the belt onto the crank-gear, yanking on the belt really hard, everything I can think of and the belt's too tight to get it around the 2 cam sprockets, the crank gear, the idler pulley, and the tensioner-pulley. All I need's about 1/4" more belt and I'd be able to get the timing belt back on and then worry about the surpentine belt. I may have to get the car towed tomorrow to the ford place to let the pros do it. Is there a way for the tensioner-pulley to move even further back giving more belt to go

Sounds like a tough time........
Make sure everything's lining up and the belt is engaging the notches on every pulley. Don't slide the belt all the way on a pulley until it's around all of them; that may help. Is the tensioner all the way retracted? Is it possible to remove the tensioner pulley wheel? Sometimes you can remove it by loosening a through-bolt. I'm not familiar with this particular engine, but I just recently did the belt in my PT Cruiser, and I've done several others. Do you have a Haynes manual for the car? Sometimes they have helpful tips......
Try calling your auto parts store and have them look up the part number again. Twice I've gone home with the wrong belt and not found out until I'm trying to put it on.
Good luck!

because i have not seen the inside of that engine yet, i will take a stab in the dark,
1) i will assume that there is a bolt that you need to loosen to get the tensioner to move more than it is.
2) locate that bolt, loosen it , lock it back down with the tensioner out of the the way.
3) now try to get the belt on.
if i am wrong and you already have releases the lock down nut, then i just have a small suggestion that we all have to do on occasion, consult the book. if it is anything like some of the serpentine belts i have done over the years, try putting all the ribbed sides on first then slide a smooth side into place(should be the tensioner)

They are a pain in the *** to get on even if you have the tensioner for the belt loosened up all the way and the belt is the right one. Take it to the shop.

When all else fails, remove one cam sprocket without turning the cam. Align the belt onto all the sprockets replace the cam sprocket onto the cam. It is less of a stretch.
I have had to do this before.

the ball bearings that you found when describing the symptom suggest that they and the spring both come from the belt tensioner assembly and in any case the tensioner should be replaced when a new belt is fitted as these are also subject to wear. maclaren.

All you have to do is follow the instructions in your shop manual. If you don't have a shop manual, you shouldn't be trying to change the timing belt.
